About Jonatán

Jonatán was born on 18th of September 2016 in the Czech Republic at the z Kasetek kennel of breeder Kateřina Podvéská. He is a black wavy-coated Portuguese Water Dog male with a small white chest marking, full dentition, and complete health testing. He is fully approved for breeding in the United Kingdom and holds UK stud number 4089DF, awarded after achieving his first Reserve Challenge Certificate (Res. CC).

Jonatán is, in every way, a typical Portuguese Water Dog — intelligent, joyful, affectionate, and full of personality. In his younger years he was energetic and mischievous, but with maturity he developed into the calm, stable, and deeply reliable dog he is today. Friendly towards both people and other dogs, he has always had a wonderfully open and social temperament.

One of his most memorable traits is his incredible range of vocal expressions. Jonatan always has an opinion about everything and is never afraid to share it. Over the years, I have learned to understand exactly what each sound means, and life without his “conversations” would feel strangely quiet.

At home, Jonatán is first and foremost a beloved family member. He grew up alongside my children and has always shown extraordinary patience and kindness with them. Both my middle son Jacob and youngest son Matej learned their first steps while holding onto Jonatan’s coat for balance, with him standing calmly beside them through every wobble and fall. If one of the children cried, Jonatan was always there immediately to comfort them.

His gentle and tolerant nature also makes him exceptional with puppies. Jonatán helped raise all of our litters and is now a wonderful grandfather to our younger generations. He patiently allows puppies to climb over him, chew his coat, and follow him everywhere, never reacting with anything other than calm tolerance and affection.

As a stud dog, Jonatán has always been confident, natural, and respectful with females. He has sired six beautiful large litters, consistently producing offspring with lovely temperaments and characteristic Portuguese Water Dog qualities. It is incredibly rewarding to watch his puppies grow and recognise so much of their father in them.

Jonatán also enjoyed success in the show ring and in Junior Handling, where he worked beautifully alongside my son Jacob, once again demonstrating his outstanding temperament and willingness to cooperate even with a very young child.

Although calm and affectionate at home, Jonatán also takes his role as guardian seriously. His deep bark makes it very clear that strangers are not welcome without invitation, though he is never noisy without reason.

Now approaching his 10th birthday in autumn 2026, Jonatán is enjoying a well-deserved retirement surrounded by our family. He has never been fussy with food — although his greatest obsession has always been apples, something none of our other dogs have ever understood. He snores loudly in his sleep and firmly believes that the bed belongs to him.

More than anything, Jonatán is the foundation of Calladano Kennel. From his second litter I kept my beautiful brown female Karima — OldeEly Leal Cascata — and through her, Jonatán’s legacy continues within our breeding programme.

Frozen semen from Jonatán is available in limited quantity, as preserving his valuable old Portuguese bloodlines and exceptional temperament remains very important to our breeding programme.
